Cambridgeshire men’s senior team traveled to the Hallamshire Club in Sheffield to compete in the 2020
men’s inter county championships. Cambridge fielded a relatively youthful side, with Tom Ramsey and Scott Drewery making there senior debuts, joining Guy Weatherhead, Jeremy Harris, and Will Harris. With the prospect of facing 3 strong counties in Worcestershire, Ulster and Cheshire the team faced an uphill battle to win the group and qualify for the finals weekend.
Match 1 vs Worcestershire
Worcestershire had an injury crisis in the week and were only able to field a team of 4 and with a few of the stronger players missing the Cambridge team took full advantage with Tom, Scott, and Will all winning comfortably 3/0. Jeremy had a tougher game with a crafty opponent at 1 but still fought his way to a 3/1 win giving the team a great 20 points to 1 victory.
Match 2 vs Ulster
With Ulster beating Cheshire in their first match, it was clear this match would decide the outcome of the group. Tom Ramsey got the team to a perfect start, playing some brilliant squash in his 3/0 win, meanwhile Guy showed great character coming from 2/1 down to win 3/2 to put Cambs on the brink of Victory. A man for the big occasion, Scott Drewery was able to come though a tight game and win the fixture for Cambridge. Will and Jeremy Harris then rounded the game off with 3/1 wins to ensure Cambs 100% record.
Match 3 vs Cheshire
Cambridge made it to Sunday in an unexpected position of only needing 6 points to qualify for the finals weekend. Cheshire had brought in reinforcements for the second day with Andy Whipp at number one and with Jeremy losing 3/0 and Scott going 1/0 down a tense finish looked on the cards, However Scott battled back to win 3/1 to level the match. Tom, Guy, and Will took control of their matches seeing our 3/0 wins to secure the win for Cambs and complete the weekend with 3 wins from 3.
Overall an amazing achievement from the team to qualify for promotion weekend which will take place 16th and 17th of May. Huge congratulations to Tom, Guy, Scott, and Jeremy for the excellent performances over the weekend.
Congratulations to the team and good luck in the next stage!
